One of the best films at 1999’s Edinburgh Film Festival, Lovers marks the directorial debut of Jean-Marc Barr. It’s the perfect antidote to the feminist New Wave (Romance, La Nouvelle Eve). Taking the premise of love at first sight, between a bookstore clerk (Elodie Bouchez, La Vie Revee Des Anges) and a refugee artist, Barr creates an intense film focussed entirely on (the faces of) his protagonists. Partially improvised, filmed at a crazy speed around Paris, the movie feels surprisingly fresh given its ingredients (lovers, Paris, art), because of its honesty, and integrity. An overlooked gem.
